Director Statement

Crystal Clear began when Karl Hirzer had recorded the musical track of the same name alongside his collaborator Josué Valdepeñas. Karl and I had dreamed for years of doing a long form project together. Originally calling it a music film, it evolved into a unique and personal endeavour for us both. A project that neither of us had really seen done before.

The script was developed and written to the music. How the music changes shape and morphs into different worlds I did my best to marry the feelings the music presents.
A concept I’ve been wanting to explore for a long time was able to co-exist with the music: The idea of what happens when you die based on the decisions you’ve made in life. With the main conflict or reasoning for questioning in the film being the decision or lack of decisions to say nothing. What warrants certain repercussions? This was my way into the film. To be able to put forward my fears of the absence of a voice I have, on social media especially, making me question if that means I’m a bad person. In the process of making and sharing this film I believe it has made me more confident in speaking out on things I care about and believing that my voice does matter.

As our protagonist passes through worlds of reflection, reward, death, punishment, and reality we witness their journey in a non-linear way that allows the viewer to really dive in and find resonance within each scene. Whether it be an unsettling fear, regret, serenity, hope or humour it can mean something different to everyone. Taking away what they will and interpreting the universal language of music and film together in way that I believe to be truly unique that presents a feeling of reflection and hope.
