Light Between Breath

Light Between Breath is an experimental dance film—born from a collaboration between artists and dancers—that transforms the human body into a shifting, energetic canvas. Rather than focusing on traditional choreography, the work uses dynamic lighting, in-camera collage techniques, and disorienting camera angles to continually blend, obscure, and reveal the dancers' forms. The result is an immersive, cinematic experience that finds meaning in the fluid, weightless intervals between gestures, shadows, and breaths.

Laina Brown is a Director, Cinematographer, and Producer. As the co-owner of Folks Films Studios Inc. alongside her brother Taylor Brown, Laina takes a comprehensively hands-on approach to her craft, producing every project she lenses through their company. An Associate Member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC), she brings a strong fine arts background to her directorial work, exploring the intersection of movement and visual art in projects like the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Light Between Breath and the collaborative art film MOTHERGROUND, which was acquired by the National Gallery of Canada. As an established and respected Director of Photography, her extensive credits span narrative, documentary, and comedy, including CBC’s Les faillites d’Astrid, Bell Fibe TV1’s award-winning series Big Small Town, and the upcoming feature documentary The Art of Social Architecture. Alongside shooting award-winning shorts and collaborating with Juno-nominated musicians, Laina is a dedicated community builder who teaches through Film Training Manitoba and champions industry equity on the CSC Field of View Mentorship committee.
